Mercedes-Benz And PowerX Join Forces To Build High-Power EV Charging Network in Japan

Oct 30, 2024

Mercedes-Benz Group recently announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Mercedes-Benz High Power Charging Japan (MBHPCJ), is partnering with PowerX, a Japanese energy equipment company, to build a high-power electric vehicle (EV) charging network in Japan. This collaboration signifies Mercedes-Benz's commitment to accelerating EV infrastructure development in Japan, with plans to establish charging stations at 25 urban locations over the next two years, providing a total of 100 high-power charging outlets to meet the growing demand for convenient and reliable EV charging solutions.

As part of this partnership, PowerX will oversee the deployment and daily management of the charging stations. It will also supply its "Hypercharger" ultra-fast charging equipment, designed specifically for EVs, with each outlet supporting a maximum charging power of 120 kW and equipped with a 179 or 358 kWh battery storage unit. The Hypercharger systems in this collaboration incorporate distributor units custom-developed for Mercedes, ensuring both rapid and reliable charging. Notably, the Hypercharger design supports bi-directional charging, enabling future dual-direction energy flow, further enhancing the functionality and sustainability of these charging facilities.

In terms of payment and service experience, Mercedes EV owners will enjoy seamless payments through the "Mercedes me Charge" system, while drivers of other EV brands can access the same efficient services via the "PowerX App." This payment integration not only enhances the user experience for various brands but also sets a new standard for interoperability in Japan's EV market.

PowerX will be involved in every stage of the project, from site selection and equipment manufacturing to data collection and daily operations, fully supporting Mercedes-Benz in establishing a high-power charging network in Japan. This initiative not only supports Mercedes-Benz's global efforts to expand EV infrastructure but also aligns with Japan's goals for EV adoption and environmental sustainability. Through this dense, high-power network, Mercedes-Benz and PowerX aim to increase convenience and safety for EV users, thereby encouraging more consumers to embrace greener modes of transportation.

Globally, Mercedes-Benz Group has been actively pursuing efficient and sustainable paths toward electrification. By partnering with PowerX, Mercedes is taking steps to solidify its EV footprint in Japan, with the potential to set future standards for new energy vehicle technologies. This strategic alliance demonstrates the potential of cross-industry collaboration in advancing EV infrastructure while serving as a model for future urban smart transportation and energy management systems, underscoring the ambition and innovation of a global leader in electric mobility.
