On October 30, Suzuki Motor and Toyota Motor officially announced an expanded strategic partnership in which Suzuki will supply Toyota with its first fully electric SUV model. This electric SUV is slated to enter mass production by spring 2025 at Suzuki's plant in Gujarat, India, and will gradually be rolled out to global markets. This collaboration marks the first OEM partnership between Suzuki and Toyota in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, providing both companies with new opportunities to expand in the global EV industry.
Since 2016, when Suzuki and Toyota began exploring a business partnership, the two companies have engaged in extensive collaborations across various fields, including the production of hybrid and gasoline vehicles and the integration of supply chains. These efforts have led to the successful introduction of multiple vehicle models in Japan, India, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. With years of cooperative experience and technical expertise, Suzuki and Toyota are working together once again to establish India as Suzuki's global hub for EV production, accelerating the shift toward electrification. Suzuki has announced plans to invest over $1 billion in India to support the development of EV facilities, aiming for an annual production capacity of 250,000 units, which will form a strong foundation for EV deployment in global markets.
The fully electric SUV, developed primarily by Suzuki, is based on a dedicated EV platform co-developed by Suzuki, Toyota, and Daihatsu. It will feature a 60 kWh battery pack, offering a range of up to 500 kilometers (around 311 miles), along with a four-wheel drive system. This "versatile SUV" is engineered to handle diverse road conditions, especially excelling on rugged terrain, to meet global demand for efficient and stable electric driving. By combining Suzuki's innovative R&D strengths with Toyota's platform expertise, the vehicle promises consumers an electric driving experience marked by precision control and powerful performance.
To further enhance charging convenience, this model will support the "Mercedes me Charge" system, allowing Mercedes-Benz EV owners to access the charging network. EV drivers of other brands can also access charging services through the PowerX app. Suzuki's statement emphasizes that this SUV will not only target the Indian market but also be marketed globally, including in Europe and Japan, underscoring Suzuki's international growth strategy.
Toyota CEO Koji Sato expressed excitement about the partnership, stating that both companies expect this collaboration to achieve significant success in the global EV market, adding, "We aim to advance a diversified electric vehicle strategy by building on each other's strengths and fulfilling the diverse needs of global consumers." This deepened partnership between Suzuki and Toyota in electrification showcases Japanese automakers' progress in fully electric technology and opens up new possibilities for the global EV industry. Together, the companies aim to foster continuous innovation in sustainable mobility, shaping the future of the EV sector.
