Toyota And NTT Collaborate On Autonomous Driving And Hydrogen Technology For Future Smart Mobility

Oct 29, 2024

In light of the transformative changes within the global automotive industry, Toyota Motor Corporation and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) have announced a significant collaboration, committing 500 billion yen (approximately $3.26 billion) to develop innovative AI-based in-car systems that aim to bring autonomous driving to practical reality. The partnership's goal is to launch an advanced autonomous driving system by 2028 that not only predicts and prevents potential accidents but is also scalable for passenger and commercial vehicles, promoting the global adoption of smart driving technologies.

This latest collaboration builds on a longstanding partnership between Toyota and NTT. Since 2017, the companies have worked together on 5G-enabled vehicle technology, and in 2020, they deepened their strategic alliance in a smart city initiative. Now, Toyota's ambitions extend beyond market growth, focusing on establishing a strong technological lead in autonomous driving. By merging Toyota's in-car software expertise with NTT's next-generation communication platform, "IOWN," they aim to deliver ultra-fast, low-latency data transmission essential for real-time responses to potential road hazards, enhancing the reliability and safety of autonomous systems.

In addition to advancements in autonomous driving, Toyota has made significant strides in hydrogen technology. At the recent "N × GAZOO Racing Festival" track event held in collaboration with Hyundai Motor, Toyota unveiled its latest hydrogen-powered AE86 H2 Concept. The updated classic model retains its iconic flip-up headlights and vintage paint scheme, now powered by an innovative hydrogen fuel system. With two hydrogen tanks, repurposed from the Toyota Mirai and installed in the trunk, the AE86 H2 Concept achieves a lightweight design of 995 kilograms, serving as a model for hydrogen retrofitting. Toyota also showcased the AE86 BEV Concept, a fully electric version of the model, highlighting the company's comprehensive approach to new energy technologies.

Toyota's dual focus on autonomous driving and hydrogen technology reflects its broader strategy in smart mobility. By investing in large-scale AI, communication, and new energy technologies, Toyota is making strides toward promoting sustainable and intelligent transportation on a global scale. Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda has emphasized that, through collaborations with industry leaders, Toyota is committed to delivering safer, eco-friendly mobility solutions that inspire passion for cars and driving, ultimately advancing the vision for a greener and smarter future.
