On January 7, 2025, Japanese automotive giant Honda announced a strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to accelerate its transition from hardware-based vehicles to software-defined vehicles (SDV). Honda will leverage Amazon Web Services' digital development platform-Digital Proving Ground (DPG)-to advance the development of SDVs, accelerating the roll-out of next-generation electric vehicle (EV) features and intelligent mobility solutions.
This collaboration marks a significant step for Honda in the smart vehicle sector. With AWS's powerful cloud infrastructure, Honda will benefit from faster development cycles, reduced costs, and enhanced operational efficiency. The DPG platform, built on AWS's cloud technology, allows Honda to collect data, estimate EV range, display energy consumption and vehicle performance data, and conduct software updates- all virtually and without heavy reliance on physical hardware. This capability will not only speed up new model development but also provide a robust foundation for the future of autonomous and connected vehicles.
In addition, Honda will use AWS's Internet of Things (IoT) services to continuously support software development and updates for vehicles on the road, improving vehicle quality, safety, and autonomous capabilities. This cloud-connected infrastructure will enable Honda to efficiently collect, convert, and transmit vehicle data to the DPG platform, allowing for real-time monitoring of EV battery health and the implementation of preventive maintenance. Honda will also use Amazon Kinesis Video Streams, a fully managed service for real-time video streaming, to build video processing and analysis applications. This emerging technology will analyze and store images captured by vehicle cameras and use machine learning to detect external anomalies. When fully deployed, this feature will warn drivers about potential hazards, allowing them to take necessary actions to avoid accidents or damage to the vehicle.
Honda is also tapping into AWS's generative AI services to create a more personalized user experience. Using Amazon Bedrock, Honda will recommend the most suitable charging stations based on the driver's location, remaining battery life, charging speed, cost, and proximity to shopping centers. This innovative solution simplifies the process of finding the right charging station while offering customized charging schedules, limits, and payment services. Honda plans to roll out this feature in its "0 Series" EVs, improving the convenience and efficiency of EV charging for users.
To support the transition to cloud-based mobility, Honda and AWS have established the Expert Builder Initiative in 2024. This initiative aims to provide Honda engineers with training in cutting-edge cloud technologies, including generative AI, data analytics, and IoT. By developing hybrid talent engineers skilled in both automotive software and cloud technologies, this program will help Honda transform ideas into integrated solutions more quickly and efficiently, enhancing the driving experience for Honda customers.
This collaboration between Honda and AWS goes beyond just technology integration; it signifies a broader shift in the automotive industry towards intelligent, cloud-connected mobility.
