The All-New Toyota 4Runner Debuts: A Perfect Blend Of Hybrid Technology And Off-Road Performance

Jan 14, 2025

The all-new Toyota 4Runner made its global debut at the 2025 Detroit Auto Show. Built on Toyota's TNGA-F platform, this rugged SUV has undergone comprehensive upgrades in exterior design, interior features, powertrain options, and off-road capabilities. It marks a significant milestone in Toyota's lineup of off-road vehicles.

Bold Exterior Design with Classic Heritage

The new 4Runner retains its iconic rugged styling while incorporating modern design elements. The front features a large open grille with L-shaped daytime running lights integrated into sharp headlight clusters, delivering a powerful visual impact. On the sides, the fender flares have been extended, and the vehicle is equipped with a snorkel and large all-terrain tires, enhancing its off-road credentials. At the rear, the squared-off design and distinctive tail lights add a sense of strength and durability.

In terms of dimensions, the 4Runner has a wheelbase of 2,790 mm, a length of 4,820 mm, a width of 1,920 mm, and a height of 1,800 mm. The three-row seating layout offers versatility, and while the third row remains slightly compact, improvements have been made to enhance passenger comfort. The larger body dimensions also contribute to improved ground clearance and load-carrying capacity.

High-Tech and Comfortable Interior

Inside, the new 4Runner combines practicality with enhanced comfort and modern technology. The dashboard features a layered design, equipped with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.0-inch floating infotainment screen. The latest Toyota infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring seamless connectivity. The center console retains physical buttons and rotary knobs for ease of use, especially in challenging driving conditions. The Toyota logo on the passenger side adds a refined touch.

The new 4Runner comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and more, providing comprehensive safety for all passengers.

Hybrid Powertrain and Superior Off-Road Capabilities

The all-new 4Runner offers two powertrain options:

  1. Gasoline Version: A 2.4-liter turbocharged engine producing 282 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque.
  2. Hybrid Version: A 2.4-liter turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of 331 horsepower and 630 Nm of torque.

Both powertrains are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, balancing performance and fuel efficiency. The hybrid variant reduces emissions while significantly enhancing power, making it an eco-friendly and powerful choice for consumers.

Off-road performance remains a highlight of the 4Runner. It comes equipped with an LSD (Limited Slip Differential) and a central locking differential, with higher trims offering full-time four-wheel drive and an upgraded LSD. With its high ground clearance, specialized off-road tires, and multiple terrain modes, the vehicle excels in off-road capability and trail recovery. The maximum towing capacity reaches 2,722 kilograms, catering to outdoor adventure needs.

Anticipation for Future Market Presence

As one of Toyota's iconic rugged SUVs, the 4Runner enjoys a loyal global fan base. In the Chinese market, it is known as the "Overlord." While the previous generation was available through parallel imports, there is no confirmation yet on whether the new generation will officially enter the Chinese market. If introduced, it will compete with models like the Tank 700, Volkswagen Teramont, Ford Explorer, and Li Auto L8.

With its modern design, powerful drivetrain, and outstanding off-road capabilities, the all-new Toyota 4Runner redefines the standard for rugged SUVs, offering a well-rounded choice for off-road enthusiasts seeking performance and comfort.
