Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer VinFast recently announced an ambitious expansion plan to establish a second EV production plant in the country. The new facility, located in Ha Tinh Province, aims to meet growing market demand and enhance production capacity. Scheduled to commence operations in July 2024, the factory will have an initial annual capacity of 300,000 units, matching the output of VinFast's existing plant in Hai Phong.
The new factory will primarily produce the VF 3 and VF 5 models, catering to both domestic and international markets. Nguyen Viet Quang, Vice Chairman and CEO of VinFast's parent company, Vingroup, stated: "The rapid growth in global EV demand makes expanding production facilities a crucial step for VinFast's future development. This new factory will significantly bolster our capacity and strengthen our position in the global EV market."
As of the first nine months of 2024, VinFast delivered a total of 44,773 vehicles globally. While this figure is still short of the company's annual target of 80,000 units, VinFast remains confident in achieving its goal. The company's third-quarter financial report revealed a narrowed net loss of $550 million, attributed to reduced material costs and increased production output.
This expansion underscores VinFast's commitment to deepening its presence across the EV value chain. The new plant will share a comprehensive facility with its battery production unit and leverage components from the Hai Phong plant's supply chain. Additionally, the company is progressing on plans to build assembly plants in Indonesia and India, while adjusting the timeline for its North Carolina factory in the United States.
By investing in large-scale facilities, optimizing manufacturing processes, and enhancing product quality, VinFast seeks to seize opportunities in the rapidly growing global EV market. The construction of the new factory not only doubles the company's production capacity but also injects fresh momentum into Vietnam's burgeoning EV industry.
