According to reports, Japanese automaker Toyota will resume production of three models involved in data falsification issues on the evening of September 2. These models include two Toyota Corollas and one Toyota Yaris Cross, with assembly lines set to restart at two factories in northeastern Japan.
Three months ago, Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism revealed that Toyota had submitted incorrect data for collision safety tests of the Corolla Fielder, Corolla Axio, and Yaris Cross. Additionally, modified test vehicles were used for collision safety tests of four older models, including the Crown. In June, Toyota received the first-ever corrective order from the Japanese government after admitting to submitting falsified data or using modified test vehicles. The Ministry consequently ordered the suspension of shipments for six models, including the three Toyota models, which were only allowed to resume delivery after meeting national safety standards.
In July, further violations related to Toyota models were disclosed by the Japanese transport authorities. An announcement on July 31 indicated that a total of 14 models are under review, including the Toyota RAV4, Toyota Harrier SUV, Toyota Noah, Lexus LM minivan, and Toyota Prius. The Ministry has instructed Toyota to submit a remedial action plan within one month.
In August, Toyota submitted a report outlining how the company will prevent such misconduct in the future. The company also pledged to improve legal compliance and strengthen internal inspections. Additionally, due to a downgrade in typhoon intensity, Toyota is gradually reopening 13 factories in Japan that were temporarily closed due to the storm.
