Toyota Accelerates Solid-State Battery Development Amid Growing Industry Competition

The rapid growth of the electric vehicle (EV) market has placed solid-state battery technology at the center of industry attention. Companies such as GAC Aion, Chery, CATL, and Huawei are advancing their respective projects, many of which are slated for mass production by 2026. Meanwhile, global automotive leader Toyota has made significant strides in this field, intensifying competition in the solid-state battery race.

 

According to Toyota's official announcement, its independently developed solid-state and high-performance batteries have been approved by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry. This marks a critical milestone in Toyota's solid-state battery technology. The company plans to commence small-scale production in 2026, with support from its collaboration with Japanese energy giant Idemitsu Kosan. The two companies aim to commercialize solid-state batteries by 2027 or 2028 and achieve mass production shortly after. Toyota's goal is to reach an annual production capacity of 9 GWh by 2030.

 

Toyota's solid-state batteries boast several standout features that have garnered widespread attention. These batteries support ultra-fast charging, achieving a full charge in just 10 minutes. Additionally, they offer a remarkable WLTP range of up to 1,200 kilometers, far surpassing the performance of current lithium-ion battery technology (which delivers approximately 600 kilometers of range with a 10-minute charge). The use of solid electrolytes eliminates the risks of short circuits and leakage associated with liquid electrolytes, enhancing both safety and energy density. This breakthrough promises to redefine the performance benchmarks for EVs.

 

Toyota has laid out a phased production plan for its solid-state batteries. It aims to initiate small-scale production in 2026, gradually ramp up capacity over the following years, and achieve mass production by 2030. This strategy not only supports Toyota's future EV lineup but also positions the company as a leading player in the global battery market.
