Skoda Strengthens Its Presence in Southeast Asia With New Vietnam Factory Nearing Completion

Jan 22, 2025

Czech automaker Skoda is accelerating its expansion into Southeast Asia, positioning Vietnam as the strategic hub for its regional growth. The company's newly constructed factory in Quang Ninh Province, northern Vietnam, is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2024. This $500 million facility is Skoda's first production base in Southeast Asia, with an annual capacity of 120,000 vehicles. Its completion marks a significant milestone for Skoda's entry into the region, providing a solid foundation for local production, sales, and exports.

On January 19, Skoda Chairman Klaus Zellmer met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to discuss the company's plans in Vietnam. Zellmer emphasized that the new factory is a cornerstone of Skoda's Southeast Asia expansion strategy and reaffirmed the company's long-term commitment to investing in Vietnam. He announced plans to significantly increase the localization rate of production in Vietnam, which currently stands at 40%, to better integrate into the local market and optimize the supply chain. Zellmer also highlighted Vietnam's potential to become not only a strategic gateway to other Southeast Asian markets but also a manufacturing and export hub for Skoda vehicles. He called on the Vietnamese government to continue providing supportive policies and incentives to accelerate the growth of the electric vehicle (EV) sector.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh welcomed Skoda's investment and expressed hope that the company would expedite its EV research and development efforts in Vietnam while further enhancing its technological and localization capabilities. The Vietnamese government pledged to offer incentives to investors that meet requirements for technology transfer and supply chain optimization, aiming to deepen the country's integration into the global supply chain and elevate its domestic automotive industry.

Skoda's ambitions in Vietnam extend beyond the domestic market to encompass the entire Southeast Asian region. The company plans to begin CKD (Completely Knocked Down) production in Vietnam in 2024 and introduce two locally assembled models the same year. These models will cater to Vietnamese consumers while paving the way for expansion into other Southeast Asian markets. By 2030, Skoda aims to expand its dealer network in Vietnam to 30 partners and achieve annual sales exceeding 40,000 units, providing strong momentum for its growth objectives in the region.

Skoda officially entered the Vietnamese market in September 2023, initially importing SUV models like the Karoq and Kodiaq from Europe. The company's leadership highlighted the importance of leveraging imported models to gain market insights and prepare for localized production. In addition, Skoda plans to strengthen its brand presence and engage more directly with Vietnamese consumers, helping them better understand and embrace its products.

Vu Manh Cuong, Chief Marketing Officer of Skoda Vietnam, previously expressed optimism about the future of Skoda in Vietnam and Asia, citing the region's enormous potential. He stressed that giving customers opportunities to test and experience Skoda vehicles is crucial and that the company is focused on expanding its dealership network and optimizing its service system to build trust and recognition in the market. This aligns with Skoda's global strategy of attracting consumers through innovation and quality.

The construction of Skoda's new factory and its localization strategy represent key steps in the company's global expansion. In the highly competitive Southeast Asian automotive market, Skoda faces challenges from local manufacturers and international brands alike. However, by leveraging Vietnam as a strategic hub, the company aims to capitalize on efficient production capabilities, localized strategies, and a commitment to EV development to secure its position in the region.

Skoda's investment in Vietnam underscores its confidence in the Southeast Asian market. With strong support from the Vietnamese government and the rapid growth of the regional EV sector, this partnership is poised to drive advancements in Vietnam's automotive industry while injecting new vitality into Skoda's global ambitions.
