Honda Motor Co. recently held a press conference unveiling its next-generation e:HEV hybrid powertrain technology, which includes significant improvements to the engine, motor, and control systems. A major highlight of the event was the introduction of the new S+ Shift feature, designed to provide a more engaging driving experience. This feature allows for precise control of engine speed, enabling direct power response and responsive simulated gear shifts during acceleration and deceleration. The S+ Shift technology will first be implemented in the 2025 Honda Prelude and will later be rolled out across all new-generation e:HEV models.
Honda's e:HEV hybrid system, which is already featured in many of its models, offers three driving modes: the EV mode, which runs solely on battery power; the hybrid mode, which combines engine power generation with motor-driven propulsion; and the engine drive mode, where the engine is directly connected to the wheels. The latest iteration of the e:HEV system introduces advancements in engine, drive unit, and control technology aimed at further improving fuel efficiency and reducing environmental impact. The new 1.5L and 2.0L direct-injection Atkinson cycle engines, combined with a new front-drive unit and integrated cooling system, are expected to increase fuel efficiency by more than 10%. Honda also emphasized that the new system will improve combustion efficiency and expand the high-efficiency combustion range of the 1.5L engine, further enhancing fuel economy without sacrificing performance in both everyday driving and highway acceleration scenarios.
One of the standout features of the next-generation e:HEV system is the S+ Shift, which adds an exciting new layer of driving pleasure. By synchronizing the two high-power electric motors with an active sound control system, the S+ Shift feature enables dynamic changes in engine speed and simulated shifting, enhancing the driver's engagement and interaction with the vehicle. The system also adjusts the engine's sound through speakers and the instrument panel, intensifying the driving experience. When the driver accelerates, S+ Shift reduces initial response time, providing a direct and linear connection between driver input and vehicle performance. Although the e:HEV system does not feature a traditional mechanical transmission, the S+ Shift functionality allows drivers to enjoy a simulated gear-shifting experience through paddle shifters.
Looking ahead, Honda has announced that future e:HEV models will be equipped with an electric AWD unit that can also be shared with electric vehicles. The next-generation e:HEV platform will feature a new, high-rigidity, lightweight body design that enhances handling stability, improves tire load management, and offers a more comfortable driving experience. The platform will also utilize a modular architecture, increasing parts sharing across various models to more than 60%, which will help reduce production costs while maintaining product diversity.
