As the global automotive industry accelerates toward electrification, traditional automakers are facing increasing pressure to transform, and joint ventures have come under external skepticism. However, despite the dual challenges of market competition and technological change, FAW Toyota has steadily advanced, maintaining a strong performance in sales while embracing a strategy of comprehensive hybridization and premiumization, demonstrating the power of its long-term approach.
Stable Sales Growth Driven by Product Strength
According to official data, in August 2024, FAW Toyota sold 72,086 new vehicles, a month-on-month increase of 2.73%. Since June, FAW Toyota's monthly sales have consistently surpassed 70,000 units. In the first eight months of 2024, the cumulative sales reached 463,000 units. At this pace, annual sales are expected to exceed 800,000 units once again.
The recent market performance has been strongly driven by the launch of key new models, including the all-new Prado and Avalon, which hit the market in June and July respectively. In August, these two models contributed 11,000 units, accounting for 15.6% of FAW Toyota's total sales. The Avalon, in particular, sold 9,264 units in just one month, demonstrating the robust market competitiveness of FAW Toyota's product lineup.
In addition to the success of the new Avalon, other FAW Toyota models, such as the Granvia, RAV4, and Corolla Cross, continued to perform well, ranking in the top three of their respective segments. The Corolla and Crown Kluger also remained benchmarks in their categories. This balanced and competitive product lineup ensures FAW Toyota's sustained and stable market performance. As more models like the new Prado, Avalon, RAV4, and Harrier are released, FAW Toyota's sales are expected to rise further.
Premiumization Strategy Driving Product Line Upgrades
Unlike in previous years, FAW Toyota is not only maintaining stable market performance but also actively pursuing product premiumization. In the first quarter of 2024, sales of mid-to-high-end models based on the TNGA-K platform, such as the Avalon, Granvia, and Crown Kluger, accounted for 47% of total sales. In the first eight months of this year, this proportion increased to 50.8%.
FAW Toyota now boasts three core product lines: the premium "Crown Series," the SUV lineup led by the new Prado, and the Corolla family sedan series. This diversified lineup caters to the varied needs of different consumer groups. As the company pushes forward with electrification and intelligence, it continues to strengthen its competitive edge by optimizing its product structure and upgrading its technology.
Leading the Electrification Trend, Technology Driving the Future
FAW Toyota stands out in the electrification race. Over 20 years ago, FAW Toyota launched the hybrid Prius, becoming one of the first automakers in China to embrace new energy technologies. Later, the Corolla Hybrid was introduced, and in recent years, hybrid technology has been incorporated across all FAW Toyota models.
On the eve of the 2024 Beijing Auto Show, FAW Toyota unveiled its upgraded "IT'S TiME 2.0 Intelligent Electric Hybrid" technology brand. This platform comprises three core technologies: three-tier intelligent electric hybrids, the Toyota Pilot advanced driver assistance system, and the Toyota Space intelligent cockpit. These technologies will empower FAW Toyota's entire product lineup.
The three-tier intelligent electric hybrid system includes the THS II fifth-generation hybrid system, the Multi-Stage HEV hybrid system, and the 2.4T 1MT HEV super hybrid system, each focusing on fuel efficiency, high performance, and off-road capabilities. These technologies are set to be fully implemented in models like the Crown Kluger and the all-new Prado.
In addition to electrification, the IT'S TiME 2.0 brand aligns with the trend toward intelligent driving. The Toyota Pilot system incorporates AI algorithms and deep neural network (DNN) technology, integrating 20 intelligent features, such as the industry-leading PDA proactive driver assistance system and EDSS emergency driver stop system. FAW Toyota claims that Toyota Pilot is among the top-tier systems in the industry.
Toyota Space, powered by the advanced Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, offers four times the processing power of its predecessor, enabling seamless connectivity with wireless CarPlay, CarLife, and HiCar, along with personalized OTA updates. Developed in collaboration with domestic tech giants like Huawei and Tencent, Toyota Space integrates the "people, car, and home" ecosystem, supports multi-turn voice interaction, and includes apps like WeChat and QQ Music.
Long-Termism as a Core Philosophy
In its 21 years since establishment, FAW Toyota has maintained a leading position in a fiercely competitive market, witnessing the rise and fall of many competitors. This long history of steady growth is nothing short of a miracle in the industry, a testament to the success of FAW Toyota's long-termism philosophy.
FAW Toyota believes that short-term price competition can undermine the long-term value of a brand. To maintain its leadership in the market, the company has focused on enhancing product quality and service rather than relying on price advantages.
It is this commitment to long-termism that has earned FAW Toyota an excellent market reputation and the trust of millions of consumers. Despite external voices questioning the viability of joint ventures, FAW Toyota continues to be an irreplaceable force in the industry.
