Chery Unveils New KP11 Pickup Aiming For International Markets

Oct 23, 2024

Recently, Chery Automotive unveiled the spy photos of its new pickup model, the KP11, attracting widespread attention. The vehicle is approaching mass production, with plans to launch in overseas markets in 2025.

The KP11 features a modern design, highlighted by a large front grille adorned with black dotted elements and the prominent CHERY brand logo. The split headlights have an L-shaped design, complemented by integrated fog lights and a sporty bumper, along with a silver skid plate that enhances its rugged appearance.

On the side, the KP11 boasts a double cab design equipped with traditional door handles, black wheel arches, side steps, and a rooftop tent for practicality. The rear features vertical taillights with irregular lamp chamber designs, and the tailgate showcases a raised "CHERY" lettering, leaving a strong impression.

In terms of powertrain, the KP11 is expected to offer a 2.4T gasoline version, a plug-in hybrid, and a range-extended variant to meet diverse consumer needs. Its dimensions are comparable to the Ford Ranger, positioning it to compete with models like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger in overseas markets.

Despite the KP11's impressive design and functionality, the domestic pickup market has faced challenges. Limitations on usage and the growing dominance of SUVs as practical alternatives have contributed to a decline in demand for pickups.

Recent data shows that in August 2024, the terminal sales of domestic pickups reached 20,335 units, down 19.1% year-on-year; the cumulative sales from January to September were 206,430 units, reflecting a 15.8% decrease. However, the market for electric pickups is gradually emerging, with electric models accounting for 3.4% of overall pickup sales in the first half of 2024, indicating a shift in consumer demand.

In contrast, the performance in overseas markets has been robust. In September 2024, exports of domestic pickups hit 24,833 units, marking an 86.18% year-on-year increase; the cumulative export volume for January to September reached 186,451 units, a 57% increase compared to the previous year. This trend underscores the growing competitiveness of Chinese pickup brands in international markets.

In summary, the Chery KP11 is not just a pickup designed for the domestic market but represents Chery's strategic expansion into overseas markets. As the technology for electric vehicles continues to evolve and market demands shift, Chery is poised for greater success on the global stage.
