According to information from Honda's official website, on September 12, BMW Group, Ford Motor Company, and American Honda Motor Co. announced an agreement to jointly establish the ChargeScape joint venture. The joint venture is now operational and has appointed its first CEO, Joseph Vellone, and CTO, Kalidindi Raju.
ChargeScape is a software platform designed to integrate electric vehicles into the power grid to enhance grid stability while helping drivers save on charging costs. The three automakers remain committed to electric vehicles, including plug-in hybrids, focusing on reducing the total cost of ownership for customers. As more Americans transition to electric vehicles, reducing charging costs has become a major concern for drivers, especially regarding home charging. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 80% of electric vehicle charging occurs at home.
At the same time, the power demands of data centers and the intermittency of renewable energy are placing increasing pressure on the U.S. power grid. To address these challenges, ChargeScape collaborates with participating utility companies to manage energy flows in real-time through wireless connections with electric vehicles, using smart charging (V1G) to temporarily reduce grid demand and feeding energy back to the grid when necessary (V2G). As a result, electric vehicle drivers have the opportunity to earn economic returns through flexible charging and can charge at designated times.
ChargeScape builds on the early successes of automakers in the smart charging space, with clients of the Open Vehicle-Grid Integration Platform (OVGIP) including multi-state utility companies like Duke Energy, Xcel Energy, and Eversource.
Joseph Vellone, the first CEO of ChargeScape, has 15 years of experience in the energy and climate sectors and was a founding team member of the software startup ev, where he was responsible for developing its North American business. Prior to that, he served as a management consultant at Boston Consulting Group, focusing on energy and environmental practices. He graduated from Princeton University and the London School of Economics, and he received honors from Congress and the White House for his high school research on hydrogen fuel cells.
New CTO Kalidindi Raju brings over 15 years of leadership experience in high-performance technology organizations and is a recognized expert in cloud architecture, artificial intelligence, machine learning, analytics, data engineering, and product development. He has held senior leadership positions at Amazon, OATI, and other tech companies, holding an MBA from Texas A&M International University and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology.
The establishment of ChargeScape marks an important step for BMW, Ford, and Honda in promoting the adoption of electric vehicles and the modernization of the power grid, and it is expected to play a key role in the future.
