Toyota Motor Corporation is reportedly planning to relocate part of its GR Corolla production to the United Kingdom in response to robust demand in the North American market. According to sources familiar with the matter, the automaker intends to invest approximately 8 billion yen (around USD 56 million) to establish a dedicated production line at its Burnaston plant in Derbyshire. The facility is expected to commence operations by mid-2026, with an annual output capacity of 10,000 units destined for export to North America.
Currently, the GR Corolla is manufactured exclusively in Japan, serving both the domestic market and overseas markets including the U.S. However, in recent years, the North American market has witnessed a significant surge in interest toward gasoline-powered performance vehicles. Toyota has reportedly struggled to keep up with this demand, leading to prolonged wait times for customers.
Sources indicate that Toyota's move to expand production to the UK is driven primarily by the desire to better utilize available global manufacturing capacity. The Burnaston plant, which has experienced underutilization in recent years, presents an opportunity to scale output without building a new facility from scratch.
