Toyota To Shift Partial GR Corolla Production To The UK To Meet Surging North American Demand

May 27, 2025

Toyota Motor Corporation is reportedly planning to relocate part of its GR Corolla production to the United Kingdom in response to robust demand in the North American market. According to sources familiar with the matter, the automaker intends to invest approximately 8 billion yen (around USD 56 million) to establish a dedicated production line at its Burnaston plant in Derbyshire. The facility is expected to commence operations by mid-2026, with an annual output capacity of 10,000 units destined for export to North America.

Currently, the GR Corolla is manufactured exclusively in Japan, serving both the domestic market and overseas markets including the U.S. However, in recent years, the North American market has witnessed a significant surge in interest toward gasoline-powered performance vehicles. Toyota has reportedly struggled to keep up with this demand, leading to prolonged wait times for customers.

Sources indicate that Toyota's move to expand production to the UK is driven primarily by the desire to better utilize available global manufacturing capacity. The Burnaston plant, which has experienced underutilization in recent years, presents an opportunity to scale output without building a new facility from scratch. By reallocating resources, Toyota aims to improve delivery timelines and enhance supply chain efficiency.

It is important to note that, according to the same sources, the decision is not a direct response to potential trade policy changes in the U.S., such as the import tariff threats raised during former President Donald Trump's administration. Rather, the production shift is viewed as a strategic move to align global operations with market dynamics and customer needs.

As part of the transition, Toyota is expected to temporarily dispatch engineers from Japan to the UK to support the installation of production equipment and share technical expertise specific to the GR Corolla. This reflects the company's commitment to maintaining consistent quality and performance standards across all production sites.

When asked to comment, Toyota stated that it is continually exploring ways to optimize its global production strategy. However, the company clarified that the reported plans have not been officially announced.

The GR Corolla, known for its lightweight chassis, all-wheel-drive system, and high-performance powertrain, has garnered a strong following in the performance compact segment. By expanding its production footprint, Toyota seeks to solidify its position in a highly competitive market and better serve its growing customer base.

As the global automotive landscape continues to evolve, flexible and forward-looking production strategies are becoming increasingly critical. Toyota's initiative reflects its proactive approach to balancing product demand, operational efficiency, and long-term competitiveness.
