Toyota Showcases Hydrogen Innovations And Marks 60 Years in China At The 7th CIIE

Nov 07, 2024

From November 5 to 10, 2024, the 7th China International Import Expo (CIIE) takes place at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai. As a prominent platform for China's open market, CIIE has drawn numerous multinational automotive companies focusing on advancements in new energy vehicles and smart technologies. With its 60 years of development in China, Toyota is participating for the seventh consecutive year, showcasing a range of products, including hydrogen fuel cell innovations and diversified new energy solutions that reflect the future of automotive technology.

Toyota's 60-Year Journey in China: From Classics to Innovations

Toyota's history with China dates back to 1964 at the 6th Chinese Export Commodities Fair, where it debuted its iconic Crown V8 model, securing orders for 10 units and beginning a six-decade connection with the Chinese market. At this year's CIIE, Toyota's theme, "Sixty Years Together, Creating the Future," reflects the company's ongoing commitment to this market. Toyota has brought a display that bridges history and innovation, featuring the classic Crown model alongside the latest Crown models, as well as HEV and BEV products that underscore Toyota's dedication to the new energy transition. Standing out among Toyota's offerings are its fuel cell products, which represent its forward-thinking approach to sustainable mobility.

Toyota's Multi-Pathway Hydrogen Energy Strategy

As a global automotive leader, Toyota adheres to a "Multi-Pathway" approach to new energy development, aimed at providing adaptable solutions for China's expansive and geographically diverse market. Toyota's display at CIIE includes three fuel cell systems, designed for various commercial vehicle applications, from short-distance heavy-duty trucks to long-haul logistics. Notably, the TL Power 300 fuel cell system delivers a rated power output of 300 kW, catering to the high demands of long-distance transport. Toyota's TL Power150 and 260 kW systems also feature high efficiency, low hydrogen consumption, and extended lifespan, offering users practical, cost-effective options.

In terms of hydrogen fuel cell vehicle refueling, Toyota introduces an innovative "hydrogen swap model," allowing vehicles to quickly replace hydrogen modules where refueling infrastructure is still underdeveloped. By leasing hydrogen storage modules, Toyota aims to reduce the initial costs for commercial vehicle buyers and extend hydrogen bottle lifespan, creating a more economical path for fuel cell vehicle adoption. Toyota is currently conducting trials of this hydrogen swap model in China, aiming to offer commercial vehicles a more convenient and sustainable refueling solution.

Building a Hydrogen Partnership Ecosystem

"Co-creation" has been the guiding principle throughout Toyota's 60-year journey in China. Since formally launching its hydrogen business in China in 2019, Toyota has forged partnerships with prominent domestic institutions and companies such as Tsinghua University, Yihuatong, China National Heavy Duty Truck Group, and FAW, creating a collaborative hydrogen "ecosystem" that integrates production, academia, and research. In August 2024, Toyota further strengthened its local collaboration by establishing its China Hydrogen Energy Headquarters and launching a dedicated fuel cell R&D and production plant in Beijing, which will supply safe, China-tailored hydrogen products to the national market.

The Need for Policy Support to Accelerate Hydrogen Development

The first three quarters of 2024 saw a 44% year-on-year increase in domestic hydrogen fuel cell vehicle sales, highlighting the sector's potential. Although China's central and local policies are driving the foundation for a hydrogen economy, challenges remain in operational costs, hydrogen refueling network coverage, and regional imbalances. To support the nationwide adoption of hydrogen technology, continued policy support and infrastructure development will be essential.

Through its presence at CIIE, Toyota showcases not only its innovations in new energy but also its long-term commitment to the Chinese market. Moving forward, Toyota aims to drive green transportation with cutting-edge technologies like hydrogen fuel cells, delivering innovative products and services to the Chinese market and advancing a sustainable future together.
