Toyota has officially announced the discontinuation of the current-generation GR Supra and unveiled two new models to commemorate this iconic sports car's farewell- the GR Supra A90 Final Edition and the lightly revised GR Supra 3.0T. This marks both the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter in Toyota's sports car legacy.
The GR Supra A90 Final Edition, a limited-production ultimate version, will see only 300 units released in Japan and Europe. Representing the pinnacle of this generation's performance, the A90 Final Edition embodies Toyota's dedication to track-focused driving and precise handling. Under the hood, it features a comprehensively upgraded 3.0L inline-six turbocharged engine, delivering 435 horsepower and 570 Nm of torque-95 horsepower and 70 Nm more than the standard model. Enhanced intake systems, a low-backpressure catalytic converter, and optimized engine control deliver this remarkable power boost. Engineers also added a baffle to the oil pan to prevent oil imbalance during aggressive driving, upgraded cooling capabilities, and refined the active rear differential. For an immersive driving experience, the A90 Final Edition is equipped with Akrapovic titanium exhaust, amplifying the car's exhilarating sound.
The vehicle's handling has also been significantly enhanced. Inspired by the GR Supra GT4 race car, its suspension includes adjustable KW dampers, reinforced stabilizers, and suspension components, as well as increased wheel camber for improved cornering performance. Lightweight forged wheels paired with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 high-performance tires deliver exceptional grip and agility. The braking system has been upgraded with Brembo high-performance brakes, featuring drilled floating discs, stainless steel brake lines, and high-friction pads for superior stopping power.
In terms of design, the GR Supra A90 Final Edition seamlessly combines aesthetics with functionality. Carbon-fiber elements such as a swan-neck rear wing, a vented hood, and a splitter with air deflectors not only enhance the car's dynamic appearance but also optimize its aerodynamics. Inside, the interior features carbon-fiber Recaro bucket seats wrapped in Alcantara, with a striking red and black color scheme that highlights the model's exclusivity.
In addition to the A90 Final Edition, Toyota has introduced a lightly updated GR Supra 3.0T model, catering to markets like Japan, Europe, and Australia. This version retains the 3.0L inline-six turbocharged engine, producing 387 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque, with the option of a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. The suspension has been fine-tuned, including recalibrated adaptive dampers, upgraded rubber bushings and stabilizers, and improved chassis rigidity for enhanced handling precision. The updated model also features larger Brembo brake discs for improved braking performance. Its refreshed exterior includes a new carbon-fiber ducktail spoiler and 19-inch matte black forged aluminum wheels, paired with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires for a modern and aggressive look.
Since its debut in 2019, the current-generation GR Supra has remained a key part of Toyota's sports car lineup, receiving updates in 2020 and 2022. While bidding farewell to this generation, Toyota has confirmed that development of its next-generation GR Supra is already underway. The new model will break away from its partnership with BMW and be entirely developed by Toyota. It will retain the classic front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and two-door coupe design. The next generation is set to feature a newly developed 2.0L inline-four turbocharged engine, offering up to 400 horsepower while supporting carbon-neutral fuels, showcasing Toyota's commitment to both performance and environmental sustainability. Additionally, the car is expected to incorporate a parallel hybrid system, paired with a state-of-the-art automatic transmission.
Design and chassis tuning will once again be handled by the Gazoo Racing team to ensure peak performance and precise handling. Toyota aims to launch the next-generation GR Supra around 2027, promising innovative features and superior engineering that will elevate the legacy of this iconic sports car.
While the A90 GR Supra is nearing the end of its production run, Toyota has assured fans that the model will continue to play an active role in motorsports. The GR Supra's farewell is not the end but a new beginning, paving the way for an exciting future for Toyota's performance car lineage.
