Toyota Raises 2025 Global Production Target To 10 Million Units, Hybrid Models Drive Strong Recovery

Aug 06, 2025

Tokyo, Japan – Toyota Motor Corporation has informed its suppliers that it will raise its global vehicle production target for 2025 to approximately 10 million units, up from the earlier projection of 9.9 million. This adjustment reflects the company's confidence in the steady recovery of the global automotive market, driven in large part by robust demand for hybrid vehicles.

Toyota's previous annual production record was set in 2023, when the company manufactured 10.03 million vehicles globally. Despite ongoing challenges such as supply chain disruptions, shifting EV dynamics, and evolving trade policies, the automaker appears set to return to near-record output levels.

According to the updated plan, Toyota aims to produce around 3.3 million vehicles in Japan next year, maintaining its long-held policy of sustaining at least 3 million units of domestic production annually. This commitment underscores Toyota's dedication to preserving advanced manufacturing capabilities and stable employment in its home market.

In the first half of 2025, Toyota produced more than 4.91 million vehicles worldwide, marking a record high for the period. Global sales rose 5.5% year-over-year, surpassing 5.1 million units, with hybrid models accounting for approximately 43% of total sales. The surging popularity of hybrid vehicles reflects a global shift in consumer preference amid growing skepticism over battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and the withdrawal of government EV subsidies in key markets.

Toyota's cautious but forward-looking production outlook also takes into account the potential impact of U.S. trade policy. While there have been concerns over possible tariffs under a future Trump administration, Toyota has not revised its Japan-based production plans. Instead, it plans to increase local production in the United States for certain models to mitigate risks and ensure continued market competitiveness.

Looking ahead, Toyota's medium-term production targets are 10.2 million units for 2026 and 10.5 million units for 2027. Both figures are approximately 200,000 units lower than its initial projections earlier this year, reflecting a more conservative stance amid global economic uncertainties and the ongoing transition of the automotive sector.

Industry analysts note that Toyota's strong performance in the hybrid segment-led by models such as the Prius and Corolla Hybrid-has positioned the company well amid shifting market dynamics. As many competitors face declining margins and weaker-than-expected EV adoption, Toyota's balanced approach to electrification, combining hybrid and battery-electric strategies, has proven more resilient and responsive to consumer demand.

By leveraging its long-standing expertise in hybrid technology and reinforcing its supply chain flexibility, Toyota is expected to maintain a leading position among global automakers. The upward revision of its 2025 production target sends a clear signal of the company's strategic confidence and operational readiness in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
