Nissan Announces Revival Of Classic SUV Xterra With Hybrid Model Set For 2028

Aug 26, 2025

August 26, 2025 – Nissan Motor Company announced at its annual U.S. dealer conference that it will revive the iconic Xterra SUV in 2028, introducing a new hybrid version. The move highlights Nissan's strategic focus on the global SUV market and its commitment to vehicle electrification, while responding to growing consumer demand for SUVs that combine performance and environmental sustainability.

Since its debut in 2000, the Xterra has been renowned in North America for its durability and exceptional off-road capability, earning a loyal following among outdoor enthusiasts. However, shifting market trends and stricter emissions standards led to the model's discontinuation in 2015. The planned revival aims not only to leverage the Xterra's classic brand appeal but also to meet the rising demand for fuel-efficient, yet powerful SUVs worldwide.

The new-generation Xterra will be built on a completely new SUV platform and feature a V6 hybrid powertrain, balancing strong performance with improved fuel economy. The vehicle is expected to offer an electric-only driving mode with a range of approximately 75 miles (about 120 kilometers), suitable for both urban commuting and long-distance off-road adventures. It will also incorporate a lightweight chassis, all-wheel drive system, and upgraded suspension to ensure stability and off-road capability under challenging conditions.

On the technology front, the updated Xterra will integrate Nissan's latest in-vehicle connected systems, supporting over-the-air (OTA) updates and voice control. Safety enhancements will include automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring, further enhancing driving confidence and overall user experience. This demonstrates Nissan's ongoing commitment to safety and customer satisfaction.

Industry analysts note that the revival of Xterra is not only a response to consumer sentiment but also a key component of Nissan's electrification strategy. With the North American SUV market continuing to expand and hybrid demand rising, the new Xterra will compete directly with vehicles such as the Toyota 4Runner and Ford Bronco. Its competitive advantages are expected to focus on powertrain performance, electric range, and advanced technology features. Nissan plans to launch the vehicle in North America first in 2028, followed by a gradual rollout to global markets. Additional specifications and detailed features are expected to be revealed over the coming years.
